I love her middle grade fiction, so it was nice to see what she is doing for the younger crowd.

This book reminded me of something I would have read as a child, but thankfully it never fell into the trap of feeling old fashioned. However, that said, it is probably not a book I would pick for kids who like lots of action or their humor on the more explicit side. It is a quieter funny book, so kids who appreciate that will be drawn to this story.

Don't forget to Follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don't miss a single any early chapter books with pirates, pigs and buried treasure. Ahoy me mateys!
Kids are getting excited about their new skill and when they can practice on stories that entertain and delight, it just leaves them with a wonderful impression about books. That always puts a smile on my face.

The book I am profiling today is both fun and funny. As a graphic novel, it doesn't intimidate new readers because they aren't overwhelmed by text and they have illustrations to help them decipher more difficult words. Oh, I wish they were all this good.

Girls will learn about the women who came before them who built the team and the program, and they will find out more about their favorite players. I do wish the book read a little more like a story than a history lesson, but it is a fair account of both the victories and the setbacks the women encountered. Girls will have a renewed appreciation for how far the women have come after reading this book.

Despite the fact that these books are a little young for my daughter now, she still devours every one. They are written by Alex Morgan and profile a team of soccer girls. Having been on a team for so long, my daughter can relate to so many of the stories and relishes how the girls handle the interactions. She has also taken some good soccer pointers from the stories - an added bonus.
My daughter read this one in one day. She is a huge fan of Alex Morgan so this book was right up her alley. A biography of her career in soccer, it is full of inspiration and advice for girls. While my daughter really enjoyed the book, she did wish that Alex had bigger challenges to overcome. She felt that Alex, while an incredibly hard working and dedicated soccer player, also had a bit of a charmed life.
But this week I had so many picture books in the pipeline, that I decided to devote Friday to another picture book that I absolutely adored.

The author/illustrator Jonathan Fenske has popped up on my radar twice with his early readers when I was a judge for the Cybils. His work, in my opinion, just keeps getting better and better. If you are in the market for an early reader please check out his sentimental Love Is in the Air and his wickedly funny A Pig, a Fox, and a Box which I had too much fun reading with a group of First Graders recently!
Barnacle lives under the pier and he is bored with a capital B! How much fun can you have when the tide just comes in and out and the sun just goes up and down? I mean wouldn’t it be better to be a fish who can hang with the other sea creatures, frolicking the day away? Well, Barnacle feels that way too until the fish gets eaten! You better believe Barnacle is no longer bored and perhaps even relieved with his lot in life!

The color, the simplicity and the expressions are all so compelling. My favorite page is after the fish gets eaten and Barnacle suddenly realizes that perhaps things aren’t as bad as he thought they were. No words, just a priceless look from Barnacle that says it all.

Now the Newbery is a different story, but the Caldecott just shows me no mercy. So while I will tell you that the book I am profiling today should probably be on the Caldecott short list, don't hold your breath. My track record speaks for itself.

However, if you want a book that absolutely touched me in both a sentimental and a humorous way, then this is the one. If those judges don't at least give it serious consideration, well that's on them. Although now that picture books are winning Newbery awards, perhaps this one has a better shot at some hardware than I thought.
But you don’t have to be named Freya or Little Thunder to come to the conclusion that there are times growing up that you will hate your name or the responsibly of a family name. Alexie Sherman has taped into this universal truth and given kids a voice when they are fed up with the poor decisions their parents have saddled them with. (For the record I now love my name, although still few people have heard of it.)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">I love the imagery in this book. Love it!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">This book is funny. While touching and sentimental, this book never loses its sense of humor and that is what nailed it as a must read for me.

She is constantly playing with perspective, shape and color and her work is striking. These illustrations definitely grew on me.

My "big kids" still pull picture books down from the shelf to peruse and frankly, I think they get the humor on a whole new level now.

I just love it when I find a picture book that makes me giggle and that I am willing to read numerous times. Today I have just such a book!

Now for your summer reading tip! Get all the kids involved. Why not have the older kids read to the younger ones? Or you can share the duties in the story, giving your older kids the pages or parts they feel the confident presenting. Your older kids will feel responsible, they get to practice their reading and they strengthen that sibling bond ... that is until the next disagreement!

Don't forget to Follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don't miss any picture books that you are willing to read until the cows come home! Yep, that's quite a few times.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Ok, I have had this aversion to the firestorm of books about imaginary friends. It was one of those stories that my son begged me to read because he couldn't stop talking about it and frankly I felt the same way after I finished. Despite being written in the 1980's, it has stayed amazingly current and relevant for today. To top it off the action is nonstop, making it a can't put down read.

Now for my summer reading tip. Books on Tape! There I said it. When you have road trips coming up, why not download something for the car ride? My kids and I recently went to Disneyland and I downloaded Frindle by Andrew Clements on my phone. They were actually visibly disappointed when it was over and had to go back to their video games! Another favorite of my husband and myself from previous trips is The Twits by Roald Dahl. I think we got just as caught up in the story as the kids. Just make sure you get the full versions and not the abridged.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Kids who like dystopian books, especially series such as Maze Runner will love this story. I do have to warn parents that there is some bad language, although it isn’t rampant. There are also some mature references, and some violence, so be warned if you have younger kids. Grade six is the earliest I would recommend it based on these things.

The book I am profiling today is an insightful look at fitting in and more importantly about making assumptions about people. If you have a child who will be going to a new school in the Fall, this might be the perfect book to hand them this summer.

Of course I want to share another summer reading tip with you. Food! Yes, that one word can make a difference. I have a basket of "book worms" aka gummy worms. When the kids read they are free to grab a bag to snack on, but only when reading. Once again, it makes reading feel more like a treat than a punishment. Behold the power of the snacks!
Both become the target of Dillon, the class bully. Joe has to work on not letting Dillon define him and Ravi must confront the fact that first impressions are not always correct. As Ravi adjusts to a new culture he also comes to realize that he acted just like Dillon in India and perhaps with this fresh start he can define himself differently.

Joe is the kid who just warms your heart and you feel for him on so many levels. Ravi kind of annoyed me at first with his arrogance, but I came to appreciate his desire to fit in and his realization that his past behavior was less than admirable. That self realization made me like him quite a bit by the end.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">The one problem I had with the book was how mean Dillon was to the boys. I have a hard time believing someone could get away with all that name calling in Fifth grade. I also felt that bullies are usually quite a bit smoother around adults. However, I was completely caught up in the story, so a quibble.

But don't worry, I haven't gotten too serious on your kid's beach vibe. While this book will prove extremely enlightening for your children, it is also full of humor and laugh out moments. This author has been able to combine heart with levity making this a refreshing and thought provoking book.

Ok, now for my summer reading tip. Make trips to the library fun! Kids who aren't book lovers can feel lost at the library. I am giving you a link to a blog that has delightful library challenges: Growing Book by Book. While they apply mostly to picture books they can be adapted to middle school readers as well. Why not check out the Newbery winners from the year you were born? What about checking out the first and last books in the fiction stacks? Some will be hits, some won't, but they will certainly give you a place to start.

Don't forget to Follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and by email so that you don't miss books that can be entertaining and informative during the summer. The best of both worlds.
In this semi autobiographical story, Zomorod has moved from Iran to California. Newport Beach is their latest stop. It is the late 1970’s and she is about to start middle school. First off, she is so tired of people asking her about the camels in Iran that she decides to go by Cindy, I mean it works on the Brady Bunch. She is also dealing with the typical embarrassment any middle schooler feels towards her parents, compounded by the fact they haven’t quite mastered the language or the culture. As she navigates between these two worlds she is also confronted by the hostility towards Iran in the wake of the Hostage Crisis. This is a lot for one kid to handle. Thankfully she has supportive friends and healthy sense of humor to manage through it. Oh, and by the way, the only place she has ever seen a camel is the zoo!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Ok, full disclosure. I grew up in California and am the same age as the author, so I could really relate to this story. I wanted a puka shell necklace and a canopy bed just as much as Cindy! I also had an unusual Norwegian name that I would have done anything to change. However, I did not have the immigrant experience which plays so prominently into this story. It is the humor and honesty with which the author tackles this narrative that charmed the socks off me.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Did I mentioned I laughed throughout? Any girl will relate to Cindy being mortified by her family at times, but throw in some of the Persian customs and I had a hard time not laughing out loud. Let me just say Sexy Grandma T-Shirts with sequins and It’s a Boy wrapping paper figured prominently in my vocal outbursts.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Despite the giggles, what I loved about this book was that it humanizes the immigrant experience for kids, and gives them a wonderful peak into our history with Iran. I learned something and I even lived throughout the experience! I also think it figures nicely into how we talk to kids about immigrants in the US, especially during this politically charged time. A story about a real family and their challenges is quite powerful.

Make sure you get The Candymakers into the hands of your kids. It is full of fun, mystery, action and candy! I really can't give you a better pick. And with the sequel The Candymakers and the Great Chocolate Chase on the horizon there is even more to love.

Of course I also have to leave you with a summer reading tip! Don't think reading means a novel! For kids reading can be a joke book, a handbook or even a magazine. My son loves Sports Illustrated Kids and my daughter can't wait for American Girl or Teen Vogue. Don't get me started on the amount of knock knock jokes that have been read to me over the years! Just remember that reading is reading, no matter what form it takes.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I really had a hard time putting this book down. I was surprised how well written it was. It started off very much like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Four kids are selected to participate in a candy making competition and are allowed into a chocolate factory that was closed to visitors long ago. However, this is where the similarity ends.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">The fun of this book is that the story is told in five parts, the first four are from the perspective of each of the participants. You see the story from the first child’s perspective, and then low and behold, when you get to the next child, your perception of the events are thrown on their head. I loved it each time my son got to a new revelation, he looked up at me just as amazed as I had been. The story gets richer and more interesting with each child’s version.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I will say that some of the scenarios are bit far fetched, but it is a children’s book, set in a candy factory for goodness sake, so I will certainly allow the author the whimsy that the books subject conjures up. Once I was into this story, I found it difficult to stop reading (kind of like a bag of M&Ms, you can't take just one handful), which I think is the best kind of recommendation!

Today I have one that teaches us about Wonder Woman when she was just a teen, trying to manage friends and please her mom. Perhaps she was a little more typical than anyone would have first imagined?

Of course I have another summer reading tip for you. Try to put out a variety of books for your kids to choose from. The library is a great place to go to get a stack at no cost to you! Sometimes when parents only purchase or bring home that one book they think will work for their kids, they put too much pressure on their child to like that particular story. If it isn't a hit, the child feels guilty and thinks they have disappointed their parent. So let variety be their guide and don't worry if one book isn't a fit. A month from now it may be the perfect read!

Don't forget to Follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don't miss any of the summer books that will make kids realize that reading really is a fun summer activity.
I was very skeptical of a book that has a full on marketing blitz of action figures and lower grade readers tied to it. What you can end up with is a book that is meant to sell toys and not a book that is well written. I am happy to say that this one surprised me in the best possible way. While not highbrow literature, it is funny, full of suspense and thoroughly engaging. What a delight.

Get those kids reading right off the bat and you can literally watch their brains grow over the break. The book I am profiling today is the perfect story to start their summer off right!

In our house we designate 30 minutes of reading time Monday through Friday. Everyone stops and picks up a book ... yes even mom. Now the kids can of course read any other time they want to, but by reading together it creates feeling of community. No one thinks reading is a punishment. Instead it's something we do together. Everyone has their favorite spot in our side yard with pillows and a place to prop up their feet. Mom has even been known to provide snacks!
I have a feeling that the book I am profiling today will be included in those talks.

I have to confess that the idea of a robot stranded on a deserted island didn't quite make my "must read" list, but I was curious enough to finally pick it up and I am so glad that I did. It really captivated me. I am always impressed when a book that initially held no appeal for me ends up being a can't put down read. That takes some real skill. Well done Peter Brown!
This one did that in spades and I hate overly emotional narratives, The main character is a delight and the story is so well written that kids will be rooting for our main character from the first chapter. This one is quite a gem.
He is realistic and caring. I appreciated that even through the tough stuff Benny has a loving family and people around who care deeply. His friendships and struggles feel real and not exaggerated for the story.

It isn’t always easy to manage, in fact sometimes it is downright hard, but the book does a realistic job at portraying the gifts Benny’s brother brings to the family.

However, today I am changing things up because I have a cornucopia of books that I love that are overflowing in my office and I just have to get them on to your radar. So next week I will return to the Flashback Fridays. But today, prepare to be amazed.

I have a funny picture book this week, which is really an oxymoron when I write it because I rarely profile books without a sense of humor. This one is right up my alley and challenges kid's assumptions, one of my favorite pastimes.

Don't forget to Follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don't miss a single book that has a hungry lion surrounded by an assemblage of fury friends. Can temptation be kept in check?

In this book a very hungry lion is surrounded by a bevy of fury animals and as the reader turns the pages the animals slowly begin to disappear. Of course we fear the worse, especially when the lights go out, but instead we are treated to a surprise party for lion with a giant cake and all our furry friends in tact. But sadly our hungry lion is not a fan of cake ….

Why I love this book:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Oh I am a fan of a darker humor in kid books. Kids love it when their expectations are challenged and the best part of this book is that they think the worst, realize the error of their assumption which then proves all too true in the end! But our no longer hungry lion does get his just desert in the end!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">The play with graphics and text in this book is wonderful. The dark pages arrive when a reader has to make a decision about the outcome and can use nothing but their imagination. The text which highlights the dwindling assortment of animals, cleverly begins to omit animals to the dismay of the reader. Of course the ending which surprises the reader and teaches our lion a lesson is just perfect.

So I am here today with some tricks, I mean books, for you to use against any kid who utters those foreboding words.

No I am not talking about a novel or a chapter book. That will more often than not get you the evil eye roll. I am talking about books that give your kids something to do, without you (or with you if you are so inclined). That is what I call nirvana.

Don't forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don't miss any of the books, yes books, that give kids something to occupy their time - in a productive way. Horray for books.

This book is wonderful because kids can perform tricks using the things they have around the house. They also get to learn how to levitate their sibling ... levitate! How cool is that? There is a chapter about how to scare the pants off your parents, not that kids haven't already mastered this trick. If you gives your children this book, be prepared for an evening show where they display their new found skills and you can ooh and aah over their performance.

This book has been used so many times in my house it has a place of honor in the craft drawer! Kids spend so much time refining their planes that an hour has gone by before they know it. They can use this solo as they test how far their individual planes can fly or they can have competitions with friends to see whose airplane has the most props. There may or may not be a sibling competition currently underway in my home, but I am forbidden to pick sides!

The youngest sewers may need parental help with these projects, but kids who already know the basics will find lots of cool projects that don't need a sewing machine! I love to see the creations my daughter comes out with when she is inspired. I am hoping she perfects her throw pillow technique this summer because momma has a new outside patio she needs to furnish!
The reason I love this book so much is that if your house is anything like mine, it is overrun with Legos! At least my kids have a hard time getting inspired after they have built the kit that was purchased and I end up just stepping on Lego pieces from sets that have been played into oblivion. So bring on a book that teaches them how to make machines that can throw things with those leftover bricks. I never thought I would say this, but it is a mother's dream.
These books have updated their covers from when my kids were young, but they still remain books your children will go back to time and time again. These are laugh out loud funny and touch on just about every subject kids care about from friends to sports to food. They are full of activities, advice and even a few pranks to keep things interesting. My kids read theirs ragged.
I have included this book because as the mother of tween girl, she is always experimenting with bubble letters and cool ways to write things to her friends. This book is filled with examples and teaches kids all sorts of fun new ways to write the alphabet. You may even find yourself sitting down with your child and creating some quirky shopping lists.

If kids haven't read her first book on the opening of Japan, Heart of a Samurai, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

She has graced us with a companion book and while it can be read as a stand alone, I would recommend that kids start with Heart of a Samurai, which will real them into a unique situation of a boy who is saved by Westerners, the brutes he has been taught to hate and fear. I always think it is brilliant when an author can craft a compelling story and get kids interested in a historically significant event. In this case they will be fascinated by the opening of Japan to the West.
Japan has been closed off to the West for 200 years and the Japanese think the Westerners are barbarians. Through a series of misfortunes related to the Americans, Yoshi is being hunted by an actual samurai. He takes on a variety of difficult jobs to get away from the samurai and ends up going into hiding with a cabin boy from one of the American ships. Today I am taking a look at one of my favorite authors, Stuart Gibbs.

So why do I love this guy's work so much? Well, you can't get out of the first chapter of any of his books without an edge your seat chase and a bad guy who just manages to get away. The action starts from page one, so even the most reluctant reader is hooked from the get go! The humor and fun just keep going, making these can't put down reads.

Today I thought I would focus on his Space series because he recently introduced a new installment, Spaced Out. However, his Spy School series and Fun Jungle books are equally as compelling. When I gave Spaced Out to my son, he went to his room and didn't come out until diner, for which we had to coax him. Can't give a book series more praise than that.
What this book is about:
The year is 2040 and America has created a colony on the moon. Sadly for Dashiell, a twelve year old kid, living on the moon is not as exciting as some might think. But then the base physician is found dead outside of the air lock. While most people think he went crazy, Dash isn’t so sure. Suddenly Dash is busy trying to find out the truth, but not everyone wants him digging too deep.

Why I love this book:
Gibbs is one of those authors that delivers every time. First off he hooks readers with his just on the verge of gross it's cool antics, which in this case involve the workings of a space toilet. He then hits you with a mystery where the kid is the only one to see the truth. Finally, he empowers his main character to solve the mystery with lots of action, adventure and a great side kick. It is a predictable formula but he does it so well that he grabs me every time.

While his other like type mysteries are set it an animal park, this one on the moon is quite enlightening. It was fun to learn a little about what it might be like to colonize the moon and I think it does paint a realistic picture of what that would entail. Of course Dash is engaging and likable and you are rooting for him from the start.

My kids adored them and I found out the publisher recently released a new set of pop-up books aimed at the younger set so that even the littlest traveler can get in on the action!

I have used the books on New York, London and Paris with my kids and Lonely Planet kindly provided me with copies of both the pop-up books and the books my family has used for these three cities.

So guess what .... I get to give them away to you!

Yes, from the comfort of your own home, you can enter to win a set of these fabulous books. To enter, simply comment in the section below (don't forget to leave your email address) and let me know what city you are interested in ... New York, London or Paris. I will draw names out of hat on May 30 and let you know if you have won! How great is that?

Target: Grades 3 and up

What these books are about:
These books are a little bit history, a little bit trivia, a little bit landmarks and a whole lot of fun. With pictures throughout and information blurbs to dispense fun facts these can make even the most reluctant traveler excited about seeing a new city! They are not guidebooks but a plethora of interesting tidbits that kids will love to share with their siblings and parents. It is way more fun to be in the know.

Why I love these books:

- I have used these books with my own kids for our trips. Generally my kids have been lukewarm about reading them before we leave because they don't have a context for the information. But when we get to our destination and start seeing the places mentioned in the book they can't devour them fast enough. They love spouting out the trivia they have learned, their new found knowledge of funny facts and their mastery of city history.

- These books give kids a lightheated perspective on the things they are seeing. Places and events are so much more fun when the whole family has a better understanding of what they are observing, and these books provide kids with a fun way to the understand the place and the times. After all, it takes a lot of time, money and effort to visit a new place so why not make it as fun and educational as possible, and by educational I mean learning about weird food, rats and snapping alligators.

Who these books are for:
Great for all kids when traveling

Final thoughts:
What these books are about:
These books are meant to introduce just a few landmarks and limited trivia to the younger set. The pop-ups are very stylish and kids will have a kick finding the real places when they travel.

- These were not around when my kids were younger, but they are a lovely way to introduce a younger child to what they will see and get them excited when they find the landmark.

- These books end with a topographical map of the city with the landmarks in the book highlighted. A nice way to orient kids and give them a general sense of where things are.
I had debated going for the last several years and this year I just pulled the plug and decided to experience this event for myself. For those of you unfamiliar with BEA, it is the place where publishers converge and share all their new and exciting titles from adult to children to educational books. The event is for those "in the industry" so it is filled with book sellers, librarians and bloggers, basically anyone who buys and promotes books!
I began my adventure on Wednesday with a blogging conference that inspired me to think about how I can continue to provide interesting content, get over the blogger burnout and continue to provide you with a fresh and honest voice in an overcrowded world of books!

I also got a chance to talk with publishers and discuss the best way for bloggers to work with them. Sadly I think many bloggers look for a lot of free books from publishers, so way too much of the discussion was devoted to getting books as opposed to working together when a blogger loves a book, a real lost opportunity I think.

BEA opened it's doors on Wednesday afternoon, and I don't quite think I was quite ready for what was to come. A friend described it as Disneyland for book lovers and that is an apt description. As I walked from booth to booth publishers were simply handing me books that they were excited about and wanted to promote. The free books and tote bags were flying as I literally had to say no more!

That first day I knew several advanced reader copies of books I was interested in were being given out, so I scouted out those books. Little did I know that Shannon Hale and I would don squirrel ears as she and her husband kindly signed and advance copy of her new middle grade novel appropriately titled Squirrel Girl. Wish I had a picture of that one, but I was so shocked by the whole event it didn't occur to me to pull out my phone. Scholastic kindly gave me an advanced copy of Dog Man, the new series by Dav Pilkey out in August and several more publishers kindly passed along books I was interested in reading.

Even though I was extremely judicious about the books I took I still ended up with a pile!

Thursday

On Thursday the fun really began. This is when the author events seemed to reach their peak. I started with a baguette themed book signing with Mo Willems and his new picture book Nannette's Baguettes. They gave us such an early edition to review that it isn't even bound yet! I remembered to get pictures but I absolutely hate getting my picture taken so you will just have to imagine.

Adam Gitwitz, author of A Tale Dark and Grimm was a delight and offered an early copy of his new book The Inquisitor's Tale which features farting dragons in medieval France. I hope I love it as much as A Tale Dark and Grimm!

Jennifer Holmes was lovely as we talked about our California connection and she shared her new book Full of Beans, a companion novel to her Newbery Honor book Turtle in Paradise

Raina Telgemeier offered up her new graphic novel Ghosts, out in September. She was probably one of the most reserved authors I met but her talent speaks for itself.

I even met up with the publishers of Choose Your Own Adventure who are reprinting the classics and adding new titles to the series. How fun is that?

I received the new series from the author of the Mysterious Benedict Society as well as the new Miss Piggle Wiggle book and got another encounter with Shannon Hale who made dorky faces with me before she handed over a copy of the new Princess in Black out in November.

Between meeting Kwame Alexander and having him do an impromptu rap about his new picture book and chatting with Erin Colfer and Dan Santat who were funny and charming I was considering it a pretty full day.

I did take the time to get out of the convention hall and take in the Chicago Art Institute. Wow, I am so glad I did not let exhaustion get the better of me. It was absolutely inspiring and gave me the mojo to make it to Friday.

Again, I was extremely picky about the books I wanted, but ended up with an unexpected wealth of riches.

Friday

I started Friday at an author breakfast moderated by Jamie Lee Curtis. The picture makes it seems like it was a huge event since she is on a screen, but the truth is I got the times mixed up and arrived 15 minutes late. I had to sit in the back and it was hard to get a picture of the whole panel without people's breakfast plates in the way, so that was the best I could do.

The breakfast was very inspiring as Jamie shared her new book about discovering what you are made of, Dav Pilkey reminded parents to love their kids and let them read what makes them happy to make them better readers (a message I wholeheartedly agree with), Sabaa Tahir talked about facing her fears and Gene Luen Yang encouraged everyone to read outside their walls of comfort. Nice to know these intelligent and thoughtful folks are the ones creating the works your children can't put down!

The rest of the day was a blur of meetings on the trends in Middle Grade fiction and a review of the some of the best new books. Stay tuned, I will let you know if they reach the promise of their promoted greatness.

Of course I had to take a minute to talk with Jennifer Nielsen, who told me the character in her new book is the female version of Sage from The False Prince. Now that's exciting. I also got some copies of the new Tom Angleberger books, so we shall see if they live up to the promise of Orgami Yoda!

I ended the day with more books and a trip to Fedex to get all these books home!

I can't wait to let you know what's coming and if it will inspire your children. It all looks good on the outside, but you never know until you get into the meat of the story if it lives up to the hype. I am so excited to get into these books and share the ones that will keep your kids up nights.

Will I go next year?

I don't know. I am not a fan of publishers directing my book selections, it always makes me wary.

I also felt overwhelmed by the amount of people and the number of events.

While I met some amazing folks, the sea of faces was a lot to deal with.

I like free books, who doesn't? But I felt the give away became more important than the quality and the match with the recipient.

On the flip side, I got to meet some amazing authors and putting a face and personality to a name was a delight.

I also met some wonderful publishers who understood how to successfully work with bloggers to give you the reader better knowledge and access to great titles.

The librarians, teachers and bloggers I met were so delightful and fun it made the lines and events a chance to connect and learn so many new things. So, no decisions yet.

I will leave it a question mark!
This one is eccentric and won't appeal to every kid, but it you get the right kid, this one will be a hit. If you think it may be close, give it a try. It has fun written all over it, and by fun I mean mystery and mayhem, not the actual work "fun".
Warren continues to live at the hotel and perform every task needed to run the day to day operations because his Uncle is seriously lazy and has let the hotel go into disrepair. When his Uncle’s new wife arrives things take an interesting turn. She is tearing the hotel apart looking for the All-Seeing Eye, a magical device that she thinks will help her regain her powers because it turns out she is a …. are you ready for it? A witch! I don’t understand why we have to take out all the pictures just because we get older. The illustrations in this book are stylized and quite striking done in black, white and red. They add a charm and victorian feel to the narrative. Loved them!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">The mystery in this book was quite a lot of fun.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">In an odd way it reminded me of the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel. There is a conscientious bellboy, a resplendent hotel which has fallen upon hard times and a mystery to be solved. Fun stuff.

The best part is that if it is a series, more books are out so you can keep the love going.

Both my younger kids have now devoured this series since I wrote the original review and it remains one of their top picks!

So you think you know the story of Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. You can recite Rapunzel or Snow White in your sleep, and frankly they didn’t impress you that much the first time. Well think again! It turns out Prince Charming has a name - can you say Gustav - and the four princes from these stories are sick and tired of the girls getting all the glory. In an attempt to set the record straight, these four disparate princes find themselves in their own adventure. Can they save their kingdoms, or will their own distinct personalities get in the way of their ever finding true glory?

Why I love this book:

This book is just a laugh on every page. I have read some reviews that compare it to The Princess Bride, and I think that is an accurate description. Some of our princes are heroic and charming, others have lead a life of pampered luxury, still others give names to their animal friends such as Leroy and Conrad, and don’t forget the prince who always runs into battle, even if there is no battle.

I love books that give us a different way of looking at something we have always taken for granted, in this case the princess stories. How fun it is for the reader to see that the perspective changes based on who you ask, and in this case the Prince Charming's see things very differently.
