Everyone Loves a Great Picture Book

It's the holiday season, and if you are looking for a funny picture book to give your little loved ones, then I've got you covered.  Today I am focusing on books that feature food, because how much do kids love a crazy slice of pork?  Am I right?

Don't forget to Follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you won't miss any of the books that feature your kid's favorite treats behaving in ways that are sure to make them giggle!  Now how fun is that?

Title: Everyone Loves Bacon

Author: Kelly Dipucchio

Target: Preschool - Grade 2

What this book is about:
In this sizzling tale, everyone does love bacon, even bacon himself.  Our favorite breakfast meat lets all the adoration go to his head, eschewing some of old friends like lettuce and tomato.  Fans really are more important.  However, being desired does have it’s downside as bacon finds out when he is ….. Well you didn’t think I would spoil the ending did you?

Why I love this book:
First off the illustrations by Eric Wight are gorgeous.  Large spreads and a great use of color draw your eye in immediately.  Kids will love ogling this one.

Dipucchio does a wonderful job with  the text.  Silly puns and the perfect use of the ukulele and a fancy mustache just add to the humor.  Kids will easily see bacon’s slide from popular breakfast food to an arrogant and self absorbed slice of meat and the ending is just perfect.  Yup, still not telling.

Who this book is for:
This book is only for kids who love to laugh and who love bacon, of course.

Final thoughts:
No matter the arrogance, bacon is still one tasty treat!

Title: Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast

Author: Josh Funk

Target: Preschool - Grade 2

What this book is about:
Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast are kicking back in the fridge, enjoying the day, when news come in that the syrup is almost gone.  Well, both these breakfast goodies are quite fond of syrup, and so the race is on to see who will get the last drop.  It is a heated contest through Broccoli Forest, past Orange Juice Fountain, rappelling down the linguini and outrunning a bean avalanche to get to the finish.  Who will win this race? Of course no one counted on the sneaky Baron Von Waffle!

Why I love this story:
The illustrations by Brendan Kearney are an absolute delight.  He makes the food in your refrigerator look like a thrilling adventure ride while keeping the attention squarely on our two breakfast food participants.

Kids love a contest and cheering on their favorite morning delicacy is certainly required while reading.  The rhyming is also well done in this story and the cadence reads extremely well making this one roll off the tongue.

Who this book is for:
Kids who love a good contest and some giggles

Final thoughts:
Breakfast is really getting it’s due this year, but it is the most important meal of the day so I shouldn’t be surprised.
