What this book is about:
Eleanor is back and this time she is dealing with a new girl in her class that befriends Pearl, Eleanor’s best friend. At first Eleanor is excited about a new classmate, but as Pearl and the new girl get closer, Eleanor can’t help but feel a bit jealous and perhaps a bit sorry for herself. To make matters more complicated, Eleanor is going to perform her first solo in the school musical, and did I mention she has stage fright?

Why I love this book:
I really love Julie Sternberg’s books. While things do turn out all right in the end, there is an honesty to Eleanor that I love. As a character she actually feels the things girls her age feel, she talks like she is actually in fourth grade and she has real nine year old problems. Kids will see themselves in these books and that is a true gift.

Who this book is for:
The text and pictures are laid out in a way that makes it feel like an early chapter book. Competent readers will zoom through this story but it will be a welcome gift to struggling readers who will not feel intimidated by the text. The books do not have to be read in order. Each book in the series stands on its own.

Final thoughts:
Such a nice series for girls who will feel that someone actually gets them. My daughter has raced through all of them.
