Book for the Dog Loving Child

I'm pulling a few more books out of my review pile that never got published but that I really enjoyed. It is time they got some love!

The series I am reviewing below really spoke to me because we just added a dog to our family.  It is a big commitment, and as wonderful as my children are with the new family member, I think we all underestimated the amount of time and effort an animal would take.  We all would have appreciated reading these books before hand!

Title: Dog Diaries: Ginger

Author: Kate Klimo

Target: Grade 2-5

Series: Yes

What this book is about:
This first book in the series is told from the point of view of Ginger, a lively Golden Retriever.  Ginger is a puppy mill dog, but when she gets purchased she is thrilled.  Sadly she joins her new family as a Christmas present, and they are not prepared for the demands  a new dog places on them.   She is relinquished to a shelter where she is quickly adopted and loved.  But when her owner has to leave suddenly, she escapes from an uncaring dog walker and leads a feral life.  She is rescued once again and finally finds her forever home

Why I love this book:
Wonderful book for any child who loves pets or wants a pet.  It adeptly deals with the right and wrong ways to train and spend time with animals.  Because it is told from the dog’s point of view, it never feels preachy but simply shares her perspective on the many techniques used on her.

Who this book is for:
Smaller pages and large print make this a great book for kids who are ready to move on from the basic early chapter books.  There are pictures scattered throughout the story but they are not plentiful so kids need to prepared for several pages of text.

Final thoughts:
There have been some great books recently that deal with the real benefits and challenges of pet ownership.  Shelter Pet Squad is another series that tackles the issues head on.  These are great books for teaching kids the love, but also the responsibility of owning and caring for animals.
